Breaking: The IEA Presents a Revolutionary Roadmap Net-Zero by 2050
IEA: Renewables should overtake coal ‘within five years’ to secure 1.5C goal
The IEA (International Energy Agency), as the world’s most influential energy modelling agency, and is now calling for an end to licensing and finance for new fossil fuel extraction.
This is major.
In a 227-page report, titled “Net-zero by 2050: A roadmap for the global energy sector,” IEA releases the world’s first comprehensive roadmap for the global energy sector to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
It shows the path to net-zero by 2050 is narrow, but still achievable if governments act now.
The world needs a “radical” shift towards renewables to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and secure the 1.5C goal, says the IEA.
The roadmap presented by the IEA would see renewable energy overtake coal by 2026, passing oil and gas before 2030.
By 2050, it should go on to meet two-thirds of global energy supply and nearly 90% of electricity generation.
The roadmap leads to a global energy system in 2050 dominated by clean energy – with solar as the largest source of global energy and renewables providing nearly 90% of electricity.
It sees a historic surge in clean energy investment to $4 trillion in 2030. This will create millions of jobs and help lift economic growth by 0.4% a year in the 2020s.
Net-zero by 2050 requires huge deployment of available clean and efficient energy technologies in this decade. This means by 2030, annual additions of solar and wind would have to reach 4 times last year’s record (2020).
